1-1 Giving Tree I

There was a tree. P

There was a young boy. P

Each day the boy played on the tree's branches and picked its fruit to eat. P

He played hide-and-seek with it, and sometimes took naps in its shade. P

The boy loved the tree. The tree was happy. P

The boy became a young man and made new friends to play with. P

Sometimes the tree was very lonely. P

Time passed, and the boy became an adult. P

1-2 Giving Tree II

One day he came and cut down the tree, leaving only the stump. P

Still, the tree was happy. P

The boy became an elderly man and visited the tree again. P

The tree said, "I have nothing left to give you. I'm only a stump now." P

"I don't need anything," said the old man. P

"I just want a place to sit and rest quietly." P

"An old stump is best for sitting down and resting," said the tree. P

"Come. Come and sit on me." P

The old man did. The tree was very happy. P

1-3 I Wish... I

Susan was watching television. Just then, her father called, "Susan!" P

"Susan! Could you bring me my newspaper?" P

But Susan wanted to keep watching TV. P

"Oh, it's bothersome. I wish that there was one more of me!" P

Susan closed her eyes and imagined it. P

And immediately there appeared another Susan. P

Susan said to the new Susan. P

"You take the newspaper to father. I'll keep watching TV." P

"Okay. I will." said the new Susan. P

1-4 I Wish... II

Then mother called Susan. P

"Susan, could you go on an errand for me?" P

Susan muttered. P

"Oh, it's bothersome. I wish there was one more of me." P

Immediately, another Susan appeared. P

Susan said to the newest Susan. P

"You go on the errand, and I'll keep watching TV." P

"Okay. I will." said the newest Susan. P

And she went to go do her mother's errand. P

1-5 I Wish... III

While Susan was watching TV, her grandmother called her. P

"Susan! Come here and massage my shoulders." P

"Darn! How annoying!" said Susan. "I wish there was another one of me." P

And another Susan popped out of her imagination. P

Susan then said to the other Susan. P

"You go and massage grandmother's shoulders while I watch TV." P

"Sure. I'll do that." she said. P

Right away, the other Susan went to massage her grandmother's shoulders. P

Each time the adults called Susan, another Susan would appear. P

So Susan could watch TV to her heart's content. P

Even when it was time to wash her hands or brush her teeth. P

Susan would just imagine a new Susan. P

1-6 New Sprouts I

It was a warm and sunny spring day. P

Cathy was playing with her dollhouse in the yard. P

Then the telephone rang. P

Ring! Ring! P

"Huh? Isn't this a toy telephone?" P

Cathy, startled, opened her eyes wide. P

The toy telephone cord was caught on one of the wild lilies in the field. P

Cathy carefully picked up the phone. P

"Hello? This is Cathy's house?" P

"Yes. I'm Cathy." P

1-7 New Sprouts II

"How were you during the winter? P

We're the new sprouts," said the sprouts. P

"Sprouts?" said Cathy. P

That's right. It's uncomfortable down here. P

Is it okay if we come outside?" the sprouts said. P

Cathy excitedly said, "Of course! The sun is very warm. P

Hurry and come out. I'm bored because I'm playing all by myself." P

"Alright. Hold on a moment. We'll be right out." P

When Cathy hung up the phone, her mom came out in the yard. P

"Mom, there was a call. My friends said they'll be here soon." P

Her mother asked, "Who are your friends?" P

"My new sprout friends," said Cathy. P

"Your new sprout friends?" P

As Cathy's mother laughed, she smiled gently. P

1-8 New Sprouts III

"It's true. The sprouts just called," said Cathy with certainty. P

Her mom just continued to smile. P

"The new sprouts really did call though…" P

However, Cathy was very tired and spoke with little energy. P

As the warm spring sunshine glimmered on Cathy's face, the wind whispered to her. P

"That's right. The new sprouts did say they'll come out soon!" P

"Right. Right." said Cathy. P

As the spring wind spoke, Cathy was softly falling asleep in its lovely breezes. P

1-9 To My Daughter I

To my beloved daughter, P

How have you been doing? P

I hear that your grandmother's health is improving. P

I am so relieved to hear that. P

How are your mother and sister Mary doing? Is Mary studying hard? P

Wow! It's already been a year since I moved here. P

Everything here was so new at first, and I am still not quite used to living here. P

The company's products we made yesterday were just exported to Europe today. Cool, huh? P

1-10 To My Daughter II

I am so thankful for the children that live around the block, because they remind me of your bright smile. P

Sometimes I picture you as a grown up, successful in business, after you have achieved your dreams. P

Tell me what your dreams are these days. I'd like to hear all about them. P

Starting next month, I can leave here and come back to Korea to visit you! P

So let your mother and grandmother know. P

Stay strong and healthy, and remember that you are always in my heart. P

I feel like I'm already there. P

1-11 Fish Moved Away I

On a Sunday morning, Robert got on a bus with his father to go to his father's hometown. P

Through the bus window, the countryside looked beautiful. P

As Robert was looking out the window, his father said, P

"Robert, when I was young, I used to go on adventures by the riverbank and catch fish." P

During the ride, Robert began to imagine all the fish that were living in the streams. P

Robert felt happy when he imagined all the fish he could catch along the riverbank. P

He thought the bus was moving too slowly. P

As the bus finally rolled into town, he got off and headed toward the village. P

It looked like the flowers were greeting him. P

That was when he came closer to the riverbank. P

As Robert walked toward the village, he felt welcomed by the beautiful scene before him. P

As he was walking, Robert began to smell a strange scent in the air. P

1-12 Fish Moved Away II

As Robert came up to the riverbank, P

he realized that the smell was coming from the river itself. P

Robert's father was shocked and said, P

"I wonder when this happened to the riverbank." P

Robert asked, "Dad, could there still be fish living in there?" P

Sadly, his father said, P

"Because the river has become so polluted, the fish have probably moved." P

Robert's father looked gloomy as he stared at the riverbank. P

There wasn't any sign of clear water or fish swimming. P

Robert felt disappointed. P

When he returned home, P

Robert thought about what had happened, and wrote it down in his diary. P

1-13 Self Praise I

While Kurt was asleep, his eyes, nose, mouth, hands, and feet began to argue. P

Eyes: "Without us, you can't see anything. P

You'll run into walls and trip over stones. P

Therefore, you'll be all covered with cuts and bruises. P

Ours is the most important task. P

Therefore, we are the best." P

Mouth: "No. Even if you are important, you can't do anything without me. P

You can't breathe without me, can you? P

You can't eat and you can't talk. P

Therefore, I am the best." P

1-14 Self Praise II

Hands: "Everyone! Is there any other part of the body that's more important than we are? P

Without us, you can't hold onto a pencil and you can't play with toys. P

You put pretty rings on fingers, right? P

Therefore, we are the best." P

Feet: "Hahaha! You all have no leg to stand on! P

You can't stand straight without us. P

Why do people wear socks and shoes? P

It's all because we're precious. P

Therefore, we are the best. So there!" P

The boasting continued throughout the night. P

Because nobody was willing to compromise. P

1-15 In the Dream I

Jimmy lay down in his bed to sleep. P

While Jimmy lay there, P

he kept thinking about the dolphins he saw in the book he read that afternoon. P

Jimmy remembered how fascinating the dolphins were when they were swimming. P

Jimmy had a big smile on his face. P

But what's going on here? P

Suddenly, one of the cute dolphins that he had seen in the storybook came up to him. P

"Jimmy. Don't you want to come and travel the ocean with me?" asked the dolphin. P

Excitedly, Jimmy responded, "That sounds great!" P

Jimmy then rode on the dolphin's back right into the ocean. P

Pretty fish shook their tail fins. P

As Jimmy was swimming through the ocean, P

he saw many beautiful fish shaking their tail fins and the green sea kelp danced. P

1-16 In the Dream II

It was then. P

While they were exploring the ocean, P

that a baby fish quickly swam towards Jimmy. P

The baby fish asked, "Please help! My friends are trapped in a cave." P

Jimmy and the dolphin then followed the baby fish to the cave. P

Huge rocks were blocking the cave entrance. P

But there was no way that Jimmy was strong enough to move those rocks. P

"Jimmy, let's whistle and call my friends." P

And suddenly, more dolphins appeared. P

The dolphins combined their strength and used their mouths to move the rocks. P

1-17 In the Dream III

Finally, they could see what was in the cave. P

Together, they were able to move the rocks out of the way, P

and let the trapped fish out of the cave. P

"Cheers for the dolphins!" P

Jimmy cheered joyfully. P

"Jimmy, you need to wake up. P

You were dreaming!" P

Mother began to laugh gently. P

"Where did all the dolphins go?" P

Jimmy looked around the room. P

1-18 A Flower in Blossom I

Everyday, the sun rises in the eastern sky and pours out all kinds of sunlight. P

Along with the very bright sunlight, P

there is also a baby sunlight that shines just a little. P

The big sunlight clears away the darkness that covers the sea. P

As the bright sunlight wakes the sea, it sparkles in beautiful colors. P

The bright sunlight clears away the darkness that covers the mountains. P

Then the sunlight moves across the mountains to the fields, P

and even dispels the darkness in the tall buildings in the city. P

The baby sunlight felt small and helpless beside the bright sunlight. P

Just then, the baby sunlight passed a rubbish heap. P

1-19 A Flower in Blossom II

"Baby Sunlight! Baby Sunlight!" P

A feeble voice said. P

"Who are you?" P

"I'm a cosmos seed. Could you please help me?" P

"Help you? How can I help you?" P

"You just need to hug me. P

Then I'll be able to blossom into a beautiful flower." P

The baby sunlight was hesitant at first, P

but then hugged the cosmos seed tightly. P

The rubbish heap smelled foul, but he put up with it and kept hugging the seed. P

As the season turned to fall, the cosmos seed bloomed into a gorgeous flower. P

"Thank you, baby sunlight!" said the cosmos, and smiled beautifully. P

The baby sunlight sat on its petals and smiled as well. P

1-20 A Bear's Birthday I

It is morning, and all the animals of the forest have gathered to participate in their morning exercise. P

The rabbit, who had moved in recently, was invited to morning exercise as well. P

Everyone cried, "One, two, three, four!" P

"Two, two, three, four!" P

Everyone exercised wholeheartedly. P

And they wiped the sweat off their foreheads in satisfaction. P

As everyone wiped the sweat from their foreheads, P

a huge deer slowly walked towards them with a huge piece of paper. P

The deer pinned the piece of paper on a tree. P

As soon as the deer left, everyone gathered around the tree to see what it was. P
