4 Lesson 17 - Reading

Today our entire class took a field trip to the library. P

There were hundreds of books in all corners. P

The library even had a computer room and a catalogue for searching all of the books that you need. P

I've been to the library many times, but it looked really different when we had a guide who explained everything to us. P

She told us that our city boasts one of the largest libraries in the world! P

She also told us that if we go to Washington D.C, we can see a library that holds all the old documents from people who lived more than a hundred years ago. P

I can't imagine how great it would be if the library were to keep my writings until a hundred years later! P

4 Lesson 18 - Conversation

Are you going to check out any books from the library? P

I don't think so. Do you need to borrow my library card? P

Yeah, I think I've misplaced mine. P

Sure, just make sure that you return all the books on time. P

Don't worry, I only need the book for one week. P

What book are you going to borrow? P

A book on elephants. It's for my project. P

Is this for your English class? P

Yes, I need to write a paper on elephants. P

That's tough. Good luck. P

4 Lesson 19 - Reading

Tomorrow, I'll be moving out to an entirely new city. P

I said good-bye to all of my friends and we took pictures so that we won't forget each other. P

A lot of my friends were crying, and I almost cried, too. P

At home, I still have a lot of things I must pack. P

It's funny to see all these boxes pile up in my room. P

The entire house looks very empty. P

The moving truck will come early tomorrow morning, so I need to have everything ready by then. P

I hope I will have the chance to see my friends one last time before I leave. P

I promised them that I'd write to them when I arrive. P

I'll miss them terribly! P

4 Lesson 20 - Conversation

I heard that Emily is moving tomorrow. P

Are you going to get her anything? P

We had a farewell party at school today, but I'm going to see her tomorrow. P

I should get her something, too. P

What are you going to get her? P

I'm planning on getting her a box of her favorite chocolates. P

That's nice, I was thinking about getting her a sweater. P

That's a good idea, since she is moving to a cold area. P

Yes, she is moving to Alaska and it's very cold there. P

Yes, maybe I should switch my present and get her a jacket. P

5 Lesson 1 - Reading

It's only been a day since I moved into Smalltown, and I already miss all of my friends terribly. P

I'm not sure how I'm going to fit into this tiny town. P

My parents say I shouldn't worry so much. P

They both grew up here, and this is the house that my grandfather built when I was just a baby. P

After unpacking my things, I made a list of groceries we need. So far, I only have 9 items: P

Baby Carrots, Potato Chips, Chocolate Milk, Wheat Bread, Watermelon, Tissue, Toothpaste, Cheese, Ice Cream P

I'm sure that my mom will add at least 300 more items to my list. P

She's a chef, so she always needs various seasoning, and she likes to have a lot of ingredients ready for her cooking. P

It's going to be a busy day! P

5 Lesson 2 - Conversation

Did you get all the groceries that your mom asked for? P

I think so. Let me double check the list. P

For some reason, I feel like we forgot something. P

You're right! We forgot the cheddar cheese. P

Great, now we have to go back! P

Sorry, I thought I remembered all of them. P

If we don't have cheese, then we can't make dinner. P

I'll go buy it right now. P

Can you also pick up some garlic bread? P

Yes, I'll be back in 10 minutes. P

5 Lesson 3 - Reading

Many neighbors stopped by our house to welcome us to their town. P

They left plates of cookies, candies, and apple pies. P

All of them were very welcoming, and I got to meet some of the kids who'll attend the same school as me. P

I've decided to make as many friends as I can before the school year starts in September. P

Since we're on our summer vacation, we can explore the town together. P

I want to know where I can hang out after school, and I want to know where all the playgrounds are. P

My mom, on the other hand, is only interested in where she can taste excellent cuisine. P

She's already making a list of all the restaurants in this town so that she can try all of their dishes. P

My mom told me that there's a great Italian restaurant downtown and she's eager to go right away. P

I guess we're having Italian food tonight! P

5 Lesson 4 - Conversation

Do you know any good Italian restaurants? P

There's this one place on the corner of 6th and Brown. It's pretty good. P

My sister has been craving Italian food all week, so my whole family is going out tonight. P

Try that place. Their pasta salad is really good. P

Okay, I'll ask my parents to take us there. P

Let me know if you need the directions. P

You should give it to me before I leave. P

Sure, take the highway and get off Prospect. Go straight and make a left onto Brown. P

It should be on the corner of Brown, right? P

Yes, you'll see it on the corner. It's called Mario's Italian. P

5 Lesson 5 - Reading

Last night's dinner was absolutely delicious! P

As my mom predicted, the Italian restaurant had excellent dishes. P

I ordered a plate of chicken parmesan and my dad ordered a bowl of spaghetti with meatball. P

My mom ordered their house special, pepperoni pizza with black olives, garlic, and crushed bell peppers. P

The best part of the night came when the owner of the restaurant gave us a free dish of their famous vegetable lasagna! P

The tomato sauce was so thick and delicious that my parents decided to order some to go. P

I've never tasted such great Italian food before. P

On our next visit, I'm going to try their creamy chicken fettuccine. I heard that they serve some of the best pasta in town! P

5 Lesson 6 - Conversation

Did you try the chicken fettuccine in our cafeteria? P

Yeah, it was so gross! P

I wish our school would serve better food. P

We should talk to our principal and see what he can do about it. P

I'm sure they'll do something if we complain. P

I think it's a lot better if you have something in writing. P

You're right, I'll ask our English teacher to help us. P

Yes, Mrs. Wright will help us. P

She is a great writer. P

Let's go see her right now. P

5 Lesson 7 - Reading

My mom decided to invite all of our neighbors to tomorrow night's dinner. P

I had to help her peel all the vegetables, and my dad went out to buy crabs at the fish market. P

My mom is going to make us crab cakes and the New England-style clam chowder. P

She's even going to bake her signature apple pie for dessert! P

My dad always says that my mom's cooking won his heart and that's how they got married. P

I couldn't agree with him more. P

My mom's apple pie is second to none. When the neighbors come over for tomorrow night's dinner, they're going to get a slice of the best pie in the world. P

I can't wait till tomorrow! P

5 Lesson 8 - Conversation

What's your favorite seafood? P

I would have to say that it's baked lobster! I love it! P

Same here! Especially with butter. I think I'm getting hungry already. P

I know! I wish I could have one right now. P

But it's not the lobster season, so I don't think it'll be that good. P

You're right. I didn't think of that. P

However, it is shrimp season. They have shrimp available at the market. P

I love shrimps! We should go pick some up. P

Yes, I love shrimps with cocktail sauce. P

Great idea. Let's go to the market. P

5 Lesson 9 - Reading

The word is out! My mom has the best recipe in town for pies. P

All the neighboring ladies have come over begging for my mom's secret recipe. P

She had to turn all of them away, of course. P

According to my mom, it took her 10 years to develop the recipe she now uses. P

Some day, she's going to teach me all the tricks that she has developed through her career. P

I wonder if I can be as good as my mom. P

I'm actually a terrible cook. Of course, I can't really cook a full meal, but I've often made breakfast for my parents. P

I can now make a toast with scrambled eggs in less than 5 minutes. P

But the eggs are always either too bland or too salty. P

I can never cook eggs sunny side up! P

I guess I'll have to stick with scrambled eggs for now. P

5 Lesson 10 - Conversation

Don't worry, I'll share my recipes with you when we're older. P

I'm not even sure if I'll be a good cook. P

Me neither! But I'm sure my mom's recipe book will be a huge help. P

You bet! P

We could practice by cooking up something simple. P

Like what? P

Making spaghetti isn't so hard. P

Okay, lets give it a try. P

My mom has this old book full of recipes. She says that she'll give it to me when I'm older. P

Really? My mom hardly ever cooks. P

5 Lesson 11 - Reading

There was a huge fire in one of the houses in our lane. P

At least 3 fire trucks came to the rescue and the paramedics were called. P

Fortunately, nobody was badly injured in the accident, and the firefighters were able to put out the fire before it engulfed the entire house. P

The police aren't sure about what caused the fire. P

They're going to investigate the matter, but they think it might have been started by a candle that got knocked over. P

It was a huge relief to hear that nobody was hurt. P

As soon as we saw the fire through our window, we called 9-1-1 for help. P

The fire trucks arrived in less than 2 minutes, along with the ambulance. P

It's a good thing that we saw the fire and called 9-1-1. Otherwise, someone could have gotten hurt badly. P

No wonder we have fire drills at school. P

It's better to prepare and be ready just in case of an emergency. P

5 Lesson 12 - Conversation

Did you hear about the fire last night? P

Yeah, I heard the siren and everything. P

Gee, I wonder what happened. P

I hope nobody got seriously hurt. P

Yeah, I hope so, too. P

No wonder adults are always telling us not to play with fire. P

Yeah, my mom tells me not to play with fireworks. P

I saw some kids play with them the other day. P

Do you think it's them who caused this fire? P

I don't think so. P
