Last week my history club went to Hyochang Park. P

We visited the Kim Koo Museum inside the park. P

At the entrance of the museum, we saw a white statue of Kim Koo. P

5-2 Reading 2

Kim Koo is a great national hero who spent most of his life fighting for the independence of Korea from Japanese rule. P

In the 1900s, he helped educate young people by building schools. P

In 1919, when the independence movement had spread throughout the country, he moved to Shanghai, China. P

There he joined the Government of the Republic of Korea and later became its president. P

5-3 Reading 3

The exhibition hall in the museum shows a lot of things about Kim Koo's life. P

While looking around the hall, we stopped at a photo of the Korean Patriotic Organization's members. P

Kim Koo formed the secret organization in 1931 to fight against Japan. P

Lee Bong chang and Yun Bonggil belonged to the group. P

At one place in the hall, we saw two watches under a photo of Kim Koo and Yun Bonggil. P

In 1932, Kim Koo made a plan to kill Japanese generals in a park in Shanghai. P

As the leader of the Korean Patriotic Organization, he directed Yun to carry out the mission. P

5-4 Reading 4

When Yun left for the mission, he told Kim, P

“Sir, you are wearing a very old watch. P

Mine is new, but I won't need it anymore. P

Please take my watch, and let me have yours.” P

Kim Koo always carried Yun's watch in his jacket so that he would not forget Yun's sacrifice. P

After completing the tour of the museum, we moved to the tombs of the three heroes, Lee Bongchang, Yun Bonggil, and Baek Jeonggi. P

Their bodies had been in Japan, but after Korea's independence Kim Koo brought them to Hyochang Park. P

By doing so, he showed his deep love and respect for the sacrifice of the three heroes. P

5-5 Reading 5

As I left Hyochang Park, I thought about Kim Koo's words in My Wish that I had read in the exhibition hall. P

It was written in Baekbeomilji. P

If God asks me what my wish is, I would say clearly, “It is Korea's Independence.” P

If he asks me what my second wish is, I would say, “It is the independence of my country.” P

If he asks me what my third wish is, I would say loudly, P

“It is the complete independence of my country.” That is my answer. P

New Zealand is a place of natural beauty. P

It has many beautiful lakes and waterfalls. P

New Zealand has two main islands, the South Island and the North Island. P

In the South Island, there are mountains that are covered with snow all year round. P

You will be amazed by the fantastic views. P

6-2 Reading 2

In the North Island, there are many hot springs, lakes, and areas with green grass. P

Because of its natural beauty, many famous movies have been made in New Zealand. P

If you visit New Zealand, you will surely appreciate its nature. P

When you hear the word kiwi, what comes to your mind? P

Maybe a fruit, but, in New Zealand the word kiwi has a couple of meanings. P

First, kiwi is the name of a delicious, green fruit. P

A lot of kiwi fruit is grown there, so New Zealand is known as the land of kiwi fruit. P

6-3 Reading 3

Kiwi is also the name of one of New Zealand's native birds. P

The kiwi is special to New Zealanders because it is the symbol of the nation. P

Also, kiwi is a nickname for people from New Zealand. P

Today, New Zealanders are sometimes called Kiwis throughout the world. P

Now, you know that kiwi is the name of a fruit, a bird, and also a people. P

Next time, don't become confused when someone uses the word kiwi, which has several meanings. P

6-4 Reading 4

Now, let's talk about the Maori. P

They are the native people of New Zealand. P

They went to live on the islands long before Europeans arrived. P

The Maori culture is an important part of today's New Zealand society. P

The Maori language is taught at some schools and there are Maori language radio and TV stations. P

There are Maori villages in many parts of the country. P

You can visit Maori villages and experience Maori culture. P

If you say "kia ora" to the villagers, they will be glad to hear it. P

It means "hi" in English. P

6-5 Reading 5

Have you ever watched the haka? The haka may look scary because haka dancers shout and move their bodies wildly. P

The Maori people, who you've already heard about, started doing the haka as a war dance. P

Today, however, New Zealanders do the haka at sport matches, weddings, or other important events. P

For example, New Zealand's national rugby team members do the haka before every match. P

It is famous all over the world. P

If you see the haka, you will probably agree that the rival team must be scared. P

Like the kiwi bird, the haka is a national symbol. P

7-1 Reading 1

Because we are human, we all make mistakes. P

It is not easy to get along with everyone all the time. P

Sometimes we hurt people's feelings without intending to. P

Sometimes, we do something wrong and regret it later. P

When that happens, what should we do? We should apologize. P

Read the following case studies and learn three things about a proper apology. P

7-2 Reading 2

When June tripped over a backpack and fell, Mike found it funny and laughed. P

He took a picture and uploaded it on an SNS. P

June saw the picture and became angry. P

Mike said, with a laugh, "Sorry, June!" and deleted it. P

After that, June felt even more hurt because of Mike's casual apology. P

June didn't like how Mike had acted. P

Mike seemed to think it was nothing serious. P

What did you learn from this case? Yes. P

You guessed right. P

You should be sincere when you apologize. P

Apologizing is necessary to build good friendships. P

Saying you're sorry is more than just words. P

You need to show that you respect the other person and care about his or her feelings. P

If you truly want to make things right, be sincere in your apology. P

The more sincere your apology is, the better it will be received. P

7-3 Reading 3

Here is another case. P

While Kate was hurrying across the cafeteria, she accidentally bumped into Hojun. P

Some food on Hojun's tray fell on his jacket. P

Kate didn't apologize. P

Hojun felt bad. He thought, ‘Why doesn't she say something? P

It would be nothing if she apologized right now. P

This case shows that when an apology is necessary, you should apologize at once. P

A quick apology shows that you are thoughtful and take responsibility for your action. P

All you need to do is to say, “I'm sorry.” P

Then, the hurt friend will think nothing of it and laugh it off. P

7-4 Reading 4

Finally, apologies are necessary among family members and loved ones, too. P

One day, Sunmin borrowed her sister's favorite book. P

Later, she lost it. P

Sunmin didn't apologize because she thought it was not important. P

She thought, ‘We're sisters, after all. P

’ Sunmin's sister disliked how Sunmin had treated her. P

How could her own sister ignore her feelings? P

This was not the first time Sunmin hadn't apologized to her little sister. P

7-5 Reading 5

People need to apologize when they do something wrong. P

This includes family members and the people who are close to you. P

People get hurt more easily when the hurt comes from a family member or a friend. P

We may think that they will let it go because they are close to us. P

Remember, however, that small mistakes and no apology add up to big emotional wounds. P

This is especially true among family members and loved ones. P

Have you ever heard of the saying, “No more apologies, no more chances”? P

People make mistakes, but don't let one mistake break a beautiful relationship. P

Do you want to apologize to someone? Try to do it now. P

A quick and sincere “I’m sorry” can solve many problems. P

Welcome to the Pop Art Exhibition! What do you see? P

Paintings of soup cans? Big cartoons? P

Do they look like art works? P

Probably not, but think again. P

They are all famous works of pop art. P

8-2 Reading 2

Pop is short for popular. P

So pop art means popular art, or art for people. P

It began in the 1950s in America. P

Pop artists at that time wanted to create something fun and easy. P

Instead of difficult traditional art works, they turned their eyes to popular culture. P

They used images from TV, comic books, magazines, and advertising. P

When people saw familiar images in art exhibitions, they found them refreshing. P

Since then, pop art has become truly popular. P

People thought that art was too difficult to understand. P

By using daily images and bright colors, pop artists changed that thought. P

8-3 Reading 3

Using common images, pop art looks plain. P

In other words, it doesn't look artistic. P

But it is still worth paying attention to. P

Although it looks plain, it is filled with meaning. P

Let's learn about some famous pop artists. P

They became famous for their special artistic ability. P

They were able to change common objects into amazing art. P

Andy Warhol is called the King of Pop Art. P

He found his subjects in magazines and stores. P

One of his famous works is made up of pictures of Marilyn Monroe, the American actor. P

Another work shows cans of soup. P

He made many copies of these works. P

Why did he make copies of his works? P

He wanted to show that art is something you see every day. P

8-4 Reading 4

Claes Oldenburg is another pop artist who made art fun. P

He made sculptures of everyday items, such as a hamburger, cookies, and a brush. P

In the beginning, he created soft sculptures. P

They were made of plastic, paper, and other soft materials. P

For example, he used cloth to make toilets. P

Later, he made huge sculptures of daily items, such as an ice cream cone. P

Wanting everyone to enjoy his art, he set up his works in outdoor places. P

He also ran a store inside his studio to sell his works. P

For him, artistic works were fun goods for people. P

8-5 Reading 5

Roy Lichtenstein used cartoons in his works. P

They were large and painted in lively colors. P

He even included speech balloons in his paintings. P

Back then, cartoons were not regarded as an art form. P

However, Roy Lichtenstein thought differently. P

He asked himself, 'Why are they not?' P

Then Roy Lichtenstein broke down the wall between high art and popular culture by adding cartoons to art. P

Pop artists believed art should be easy. P

Anyone can create and enjoy art. P

How about creating a work of pop art today? P

By using daily images in a creative way, you can make a work of art for everyone. P

This is the most important lesson from pop art. P

9-1 Reading 1

Who are the people who change the world? P

Do you think you are too young to be one of these people? P

In the following stories you will meet three teenagers who used their ideas to make the world a better place. P

A Robotic Hand from a Helpful Mind. P

One day, when I was fourteen, I came across a little girl at a science fair. P

She had a robotic hand that could only open and close. P

I was surprised that the hand had cost her 80,000 dollars! P

‘I wish she had a better robotic hand,’ I thought to myself. P

With that, I started to make a much cheaper and better robotic hand. P

After many failures, finally, by using 3D printing technology, I was able to make a useful robotic hand for the price of only 300 dollars. P

I decided to share the designs and software for my 3D robotic hand with others for free. P

Maybe someone can take what I have done and do something useful with it. P

No one person can change the world, but we can build a better world by working together. P

9-3 Reading 3

Headbands for Girls' Education. P

'Why can't many girls in Africa go to school as I can? I wish they could go to school, too.' P

I had this thought when I was twelve. P

I realized that their families couldn't afford it. P

I wondered if I could do something for those girls. P

Then I had an idea. P

For my birthday, I asked my parents to buy me a sewing machine. P

They bought me one, and I learned how to make headbands for myself. P

I created ten headbands and sold them at my school. P

Soon, I raised enough money to send one girl in Africa to school. P

I couldn't stop there. P

9-4 Reading 4

I started a business to help girls in Africa who couldn't go to school. P

Thanks to the success of my business, I can pay the school fees for many poor girls in countries like Kenya and Uganda to go to school. P

I also pay for their textbooks, uniforms, and pencils. P

Isn't it amazing? My advice to you is to just do something. P

When you see a need, act. P

Start small, taking little steps. P

Your warm heart can change lives. P

Useless Corn Cobs as Useful Water Filters. P

As a young girl living in the countryside in India, I often found that the water around us was seriously polluted. P

I wondered how I could solve this problem. P

Then I hit on the idea to use corn cobs. P

Useless corn cobs were everywhere in my village. P

I thought that the small holes in the corn cobs could filter dirty matter out of the polluted water. P

One day, I picked up some dried cobs along the road, washed them, and placed them in a bowl of dirty water. P

After a while, I checked the water, and it looked much clearer. P

Then, using corn cobs that I had collected from farmers, I built a filtering system. P

My system removed 70 to 80 percent of the dirty matter from the water. P

I hope my filtering system can clean up all the lakes not only in my village but also in other areas. P
