Lesson 4-1

I love my dear Puss. Her fur is so warm. P

And, if I don't hurt her, she'll do me no harm. P

I'll pat my dear Puss, and then she will purr. P

And show me her thanks, for my kind deeds to her. P

Puss loves warm milk. P

She is very clean, unlike dogs. P

Puss sleeps next to me at night. P

Lesson 4-2

When the stars, at set of sun, watch you from on high. P

When the light of morn has come, think the Lord is near. P

All you do, and all you say, he can see and hear. P

When you work and when you play, think the Lord is near. P

All your joys and griefs he knows, sees each smile and tear. P

When to him you tell your woes, know the Lord will hear. P

Lesson 4-3

Do you see that tall tree? P

Long ago it sprang up from a small nut. P

Do you know who made it do so? P

It was God, my child. God made the world and all things in it. P

He made the sun to light the day, and the moon to shine at night. P

God shows that he loves us by all that he has done for us. P

Should we not then love him? P

Lesson 4-4

Let us watch the sheep as they feed on the hills. P

They like to eat the new grass. P

Do you see my two lambs? P

I had two more, but an old wolf took them one night. P

I love my pet lambs. It would be wrong to hurt them. P

So I got a dog to protect my sheep. P

The sheep are very soft and nice. P

I can make clothes out of the sheep's wool. P

Lesson 4-6

One day, John went to the pond to fish. P

His dog, Watch, went with him. P

John sat on a log for a long time, but did not catch a fish. P

As he got up to go, he fell off the log. P

Watch sprang in to save him. P

John put his arms around the dog's neck, and was soon safe on the log once more. P

"Thank you, my brave old dog," said John to Watch. P

Lesson 4-7

The tall house which you see on that high rock is a lighthouse. P

At night its light is seen far out at sea, and the men on ships can tell where to go. P

If it were not for this, they would run into the rocks. P

How would you like to live in a lighthouse? P

Working at a lighthouse is a very important job. P

You can save many lives! P

Ships are always thankful for people who work at a lighthouse. P

Lesson 4-8

James has been to the mill. P

The day is warm, and he lets his horse stand in the shade. P

A girl asks him to show her the way to the town. P

He tells her the way, and then rides on. P

The girl was carrying food for her grandmother. P

James is on his way to the lake to catch fish. P

Since it is hot, James is wearing a big hat. P

The horse is pulling a cart full of food. P

Lesson 4-9

Ned and John are hard at work. P

John has a saw and Ned has an ax. P

They will try to cut all of the wood which you see in the pile. P

Do you think they can do this in one day? P

John and Ned need to hurry if they want to finish soon. P

John and Ned are very sweaty. P

John is trying to fix the fence behind him. P

Ned is cutting wood for the fireplace. P

Lesson 4-11

The boys have made a big snowman. P

They have put a tall hat on his head, and an old pipe in his mouth. P

Hear them laugh as they play! P

The man and the woman caught fish at the pond. P

The children love the snow since they don't have to go to school. P

The children are also excited about Christmas. P

The boys will make snow angels after the snowman. P

Lesson 4-12

"Buzz! buzz!" a bee said to Mary. P

"What do you mean?" said Mary. "Please tell me once more." P

"Buzz! Buzz! Buzz!" it said, but Mary could not tell its wants. P

I think it said, "Please let me get some sweets in this vine." P

"I need to take the nectar from the plants!" P

"Why do you need the nectar from the plants?" P

"So that I can make honey!" P

Lesson 4-13

The girls and boys all love Miss May; she is so kind to them. P

Miss May tells them there is a rule that she wants them to keep. P

It is, "Do to each one as you would like each one to do to you." P

This is a good rule, and all boys and girls should keep it. P

Miss May is a good teacher to her students. P

The boys and girls all listen to Miss May. P

The children are very close to Miss May. P

Miss May and the children are at school. P

Lesson 4-14

Bess, do you hear a noise? P

Yes, Tom, what is it? P

It is the mill by our house. Logs are cut there. P

How do they cut the logs, Tom, with an ax? P

Not with an ax, Bess. It is too much work. They cut them with a saw. P

May we go see the mill at work, Tom? P

Sure. We should go soon, Bess, or the pile of wood will be gone. P

Our two goats and the cart are here, Tom. P

We can ride to the mill. P

Lesson 4-16

It is the first of May. P

The boys and girls have gone to the woods to have a good time. P

See them at their play. P

The girls have wreaths in their hands. P

Now they will crown someone Queen of the May. P

Who shall it be? P

It should be the best girl, and that is Kate. P

Kate is very smart and gorgeous. P

All the boys like Kate. P

Kate is friends with everyone. P

The boys try their best to impress Kate. P

Lesson 4-17

Come boys and feed the cows. P

The sun has set, and they are at the barn. P

One hot day Ann and Nell sat on the grass in the shade of a big tree. P

They like to rock their dolls, and sing to them. P

The brave men in our boat are on their way to the ship. P

They will save the men in the ship, if they can. P

They will not let them drown. P

What bird has big eyes? P

The owl. Can an owl see at night? P

Yes, an owl can see best at night. P

Lesson 4-18

The sun will soon set. P

The cows are on their way to the barn. P

One old cow has a bell on her neck. P

She sees our dog, but she will not run. P

Our dog is kind to the cows. P

The dog is leading them back to the barn. P

The cows are going home to rest. P

The dog is protecting the cows. P

The cows are very slow. P

It is the dog's job to protect the cows. P

Lesson 4-19

Henry Black and Ned Bell live near our house. P

They go to school, and I see them go by each day with their books and slates. P

Miss May tells the girls and boys that they should be at the schoolhouse when the bell rings. P

So Henry walks fast, and is first at school. P

He is a good boy and wants to keep the rule of the school. P

Ned is not a good boy. P

I do not think he likes to go to school or to church. P

I saw him try to kill a quail with a stone. P

But I know that a good child would not try to kill a bird. P
