In the work of art on the right, the word includes an image of a delicious fruit, hongsi. P
It shows that autumn is a season of fruit. P
The work of art on the left shows a Korean word and a Chinese character. P
It looks like a happy woman walking down a road with autumn leaves. P
Both of these works express the feeling of autumn through beautiful handwriting. P
This kind of art is called calligraphy. P
8-5 Reading 2
Calligraphy is not new. P
Many different kinds of calligraphy works from long ago can be found all around the world. P
Look at the two examples from Korea and the UK below. P
Can you tell the difference? The left one was created by Chusa in the period of the Joseon Dynasty. P
The characters were painted with a soft brush. P
The right one, The Canterbury Tales, was created by Chaucer in England in the late 1400s. P
It was written with a pen. P
Different writing tools led to different styles of calligraphy. P
Of course, all calligraphers had to practice hard to make their unique styles. P
8-6 Reading 3
Today calligraphy is widely used around us. P
You can find designers' artistic touches on movie posters, book covers, music CDs, and clothes. P
Below are some examples. Look at the title on the movie poster. P

Anyone can start writing calligraphy. P
It's not easy to write by hand well at first, but practice makes perfect. P
Keep trying and make it part of your everyday life. P
Write with your feelings on birthday cards, bookmarks, or gifts. P
Soon you will build up your own world of calligraphy. P

Are you interested in Hangeul, Kevin? P
Yes, very much. I want to join them and learn it. P
Julie, are you interested in hanbok? P
Then, what are you interested in? P

9-1 Get Ready
I'm not happy about this fountain. It's too high for some kids. P
Well, I'm planning to put lower fountains together with it. P
I don't like the high steps here. People in wheelchairs can't get in. P
Right. I'm thinking of building a new way with no steps. P
I'm not happy about this swing. People in wheelchairs can't get on it easily. P
Right. I'm planning to hang a bigger and safer seat for them. P
9-2 Listen & Talk
I'm not happy about the button. P
Why? What's wrong with it? P
It's too high. Children or people in wheelchairs can't reach it. P
I'm thinking of putting another switch for them. P
I'm not happy about the sign. There are some people who can't see. P
Right. Do you have any ideas? P
Well, I'm thinking of adding Braille on the sign. P
I'm not happy about the lights. P
What's wrong with them? P
The traffic lights look the same to some people who are blind to colors. P
Oh, I see. How about putting an image on each light? P
A walking man on the green light and a standing man on the red light? Good idea! P
9-3 Real-life Scene
What are you doing here? P
I’m thinking of ways to help Miso. P
What’s wrong? P
She can’t turn on the light by herself. This switch is too high for her. P
That’s right. I’m not happy about it, either. Do you have any good ideas about that? P
I’m thinking of putting a step box here below the switch. P
Good idea. And I’ll change the switch to a bigger one. P
Great. Grandma will like it, too. She can turn on the light more easily. P
9-4 Reading 1
In 1979, a woman started a journey to cities in the U.S. and Canada. P
She looked over 80.She couldn't see or hear well. P
She couldn't walk well without a stick. P
With all these difficulties, the woman had to climb stairs in subway stations and get on crowded buses. P
She had to open heavy doors and use can openers with her weak hands. P
Sometimes she got hurt or found herself in danger. P
Every moment was very difficult for her, but she visited more than 115 cities and ended her trip in 1982. P
9-5 Reading 2
Who was the woman and what made her do all this? P
She was Patricia Moore, a 26-year-old designer. P
During the 1970's, she worked for a big design company. P
She often asked at meetings, "How about designing for old or weak people?" P
The other designers always answered, "We don't design for those people.“ P
She became tired of the same cold answer. P
Finally, she decided to become one of "those people" and travel around many cities to understand their difficulties better. P
For this, she put on her grandmother's clothes, uncomfortable shoes, and thick glasses. P
The shoes were so uncomfortable that she couldn't walk well without a stick. P
The glasses were so thick that she couldn't see well with them. P
She also put lots of cotton in her ears to make her hearing bad. P
9-6 Reading 3
During her journey, Patricia felt the difficulties old people go through. P
From this experience, she designed products anybody could use safely and easily. P
This was the beginning of "universal design," or "design for all." P
One example of her universal design ideas is low-floor buses. P
They have no steps and have such a low floor that even a person in a wheelchair can use them without any help. P
Of course, this helps other people get on the bus more comfortably, too. P
Today more and more designers are following Patricia's way. P
Products like big flat light switches, doors with easy handles, and phones with touch buttons are helping people live better lives. P
Look around you, feel the difficulties of people who are older or weaker, and try to find solutions from their point of view. P
You could be the next Patricia Moore and make the world a better place for everybody. P
9-7 Express Yourself
I'm not happy about my brother's chair. It's too low and too hard. P
Right. I'm thinking of buying this one. What do you think? P
Looks great. I think he can use it for so long, even after he grows taller. P
I'm not happy about the door handles in my house. They are not easy to use for my grandma. P
How about this one? She will pull it and open the door easily. P
I'm thinking of buying this spoon. It will help my grandma eat soup easily. P
Right. She doesn't have to hold it with her fingers. P

This is Saebom Youth Center in the middle of our town. P
We like this place because we can learn many things, such as dance and music. P
We can also play board games and take a break here. P
If you cut the shape A into two same pieces, you can then make all the other shapes (B, C, D, E, F, G) from those two pieces. P
Place 10 balls in 5 lines in such a way that each line has exactly 4 balls on it. P
A lot of plastic spoons are thrown away every year. P
Most plastic breaks down into smaller pieces in the ocean. P
Very small pieces of plastic go into fish. P
If you eat the fish, you eat the plastic, too. P
Up to 11,000 pieces each year! P
We had a universal design contest for our school last month. P
Here are the winners’ works. P
When your hands come close, water comes out. P
When you pull your hands away, the water stops. P
You don’t need to turn or touch any parts. P
We can save lots of water with this. P
This is our school park between two buildings. P
Anybody can go up and down easily here. P
Also, we can sit and get some rest here. P
These are special desks and chairs for the classroom. P
For group activities, you can get them together and make a wonderful group table for three, four, or five students. P
