We call such people smombies, smartphone zombies. P

We often find different paintings with the same subject. P

An example is The Flight of Icarus by Henri Matisse and The Fall of Icarus by Marc Chagall. P

They are both about the same Greek myth. P

Daedalus was a great inventor. P

King Minos liked Daedalus’ work so much that he wanted to keep Daedalus with him forever. P

Daedalus, however, tried to leave, so the King kept him and his son, Icarus, in a tall tower. P

Daedalus wanted to escape. P

6-5 Reading 2

One day, Daedalus saw birds flying. P

“Wings! I need wings!” he shouted. P

Daedalus then gathered bird feathers and glued them together with wax. P

When the wings were ready, he warned his son, P

“Don’t fly too close to the sun. P

The wax will melt. P

Daedalus and Icarus began to fly. P

Icarus was so excited that he forgot his father’s warning. P

He flew higher and higher, and the wax began to melt. P

“Oh, no! I’m falling,” Icarus cried out. P

Icarus fell into the sea and died. P

6-6 Reading 3

Matisse and Chagall both deal with the same subject in their paintings, but they are different. P

First, in Matisse’s painting, you can see Icarus flying, but in Chagall’s painting, the boy is falling. P

This difference comes from the different ideas that the two painters had. P

Matisse thought that Icarus was brave and adventurous. P

In contrast, Chagall thought that Icarus was foolish. P

6-7 Reading 4

Second, Matisse’s painting is very simple, but Chagall’s painting has many details. P

In Matisse’s painting, there are only Icarus and some stars. P

Furthermore, Icarus’ body has just a simple outline. P

In contrast, Chagall painted many people and houses in addition to Icarus. P

This difference comes from the different painting styles of the two painters. P

Whose painting do you like more? P

People will have different answers because they may see the same thing in different ways. P

Rada lived on a little world, far out in space. P

She lived there with her father, mother, and brother Jonny. P

Rada’s father and other people worked on spaceships. P

Only Rada and Jonny were children, and they were born in space. P

One day, Dad told Rada and Jonny, “We’re going back to Earth tomorrow.” P

Rada and Jonny looked at Dad in surprise and floated towards him. P

Rada asked Dad, “What’s it like on Earth?” P

“Everything is different there. For example, the sky is blue,” answered Dad. P

“I’ve never seen a blue sky,” said Jonny. P

“The sky is always black here,” said Rada. P

7-4 Reading 2

“You don’t have to wear your big heavy space suits because there is air everywhere. P

It’s also hard to jump there because Earth pulls you down,” said Dad. P

“What else?” asked Rada. P

“There are hills, and they are covered with soft green grass. P

You can roll down the hills,” answered Mom. P

“Dad, have you ever rolled down a hill?” asked Rada. P

“Yes, it’s really amazing!” answered Dad. P

Jonny was thirsty, so he opened a milk container and shook it. P

The milk floated in the air and formed balls. P

Jonny swallowed the balls. P

“Jonny, if you drink milk that way on Earth, you’ll get wet,” said Mom. P

7-5 Reading 3

Later that night, Rada and Jonny talked a long time about Earth. P

It was exciting to think about all the new things they were going to see and do. P

There was one new thing Rada and Jonny really wanted to do. P

They thought about it all night and didn’t tell Mom and Dad about it. P

It was their secret. P

The next day, Rada’s family got on a spaceship. P

“It’s going to be a long trip,” said Mom. P

“That’s alright. I’m so excited!” said Rada. P

7-6 Reading 4

The spaceship finally landed. P

“Dad, it’s difficult to walk on Earth,” said Rada. P

“I know. Earth is pulling you down,” said Dad. P

Rada and Jonny couldn’t float anymore. P

That was the first new thing. P

“What’s that sound?” asked Rada. P

“A bird is singing,” said Mom. P

“I’ve never heard a bird sing,” said Rada. P

“And I’ve never felt the wind,” said Jonny. P

These were all new things. P

Rada and Jonny ran up the nearest hill. P

At the top, they looked at each other and laughed. P

Then they lay down on the soft green grass and rolled down the hill. P

That was their secret! P

“This is the best new thing of all!” shouted Rada and Jonny. P

And they ran up to the top of the hill again. P

On May 27, 2011, 297 books of Uigwe, a collection of royal books the French army took in 1866, came back to Korea. P

The person behind this return is Dr.Park Byeong-seon, a historian who spent her whole life searching for Korean national treasures abroad. P

I studied history in college. I went to France to continue my studies in 1955. P

As you know, the French army took many of our national treasures in 1866. P

I wanted to find them while I was studying there. Uigwe was one of them. P

8-4 Reading 2

You found 297 books of Uigwe in the National Library of France, in Paris. P

Please tell me how you found them. P

As soon as I became a researcher at the National Library in 1967, I began to look for Uigwe. P

After 10 years, in 1977, I finally found the books. P

I think I looked at more than 30 million books. P

I’m sure you were very excited when you found the books. P

I was, but more difficulties were waiting for me. P

I thought that the books should be returned to Korea, but my bosses at the library didn’t like that idea. P

They even thought that I was a Korean spy and fired me. P

After that, I had to go to the library as a visitor, so it was not easy to do research on Uigwe. P

However, I didn’t give up. P

For more than ten years, I went to the library every day to finish my research. P

I wanted to show people the value of Uigwe. P

The results of your research were published as a book in Korea in 1990. P

Many Koreans became interested in Uigwe because of your book. P

In 1992, the Korean government asked the French government for its return and, finally, the 297 books are here now. P

8-5 Reading 3

Before I finish this interview, I’d like to ask you about Jikji, a book that changed the history of printing. P

I found it in my first year at the library. P

I knew right away that it was very special. P

I worked hard to prove its value and finally succeeded. P

At a book exhibition in Paris in 1972, Jikji was displayed as the oldest book in the world that was printed with movable metal type. P

Dr.Park, thanks to your hard work, Jikji and Uigwe were found, and all Koreans thank you for that. P

I hope people will become more interested in our national treasures abroad and work for their return. P

Thank you for helping me. Good-bye! P

Homer had enough doughnuts, so he pushed the stop button, but nothing happened. P

The doughnuts kept coming out of the machine. P

What’s wrong? I think I should call Uncle Bob. P

The shop was now full of doughnuts. Homer piled the doughnuts on the counter. P

Please come back right away. Something’s wrong with the doughnut machine. P

How can we sell all these doughnuts? P

Just then the lady came back to the shop. P

I lost my diamond ring. I think I left it on the counter. P

I remember. You took it off before you started to mix the batter. P

Everyone looked for the diamond ring, but they couldn’t find it. P

I’ll give a reward of one hundred dollars to the person who finds that ring! P

The ring fell into the batter. I’m sure it’s inside one of these doughnuts! P

Now we have to break up all of these doughnuts to find the ring. P

Don’t worry, Uncle. I have an idea. P

Homer took a piece of paper and made a sign. P

He then put it in the shop’s window. P

Then many people began to buy the doughnuts. P

All of a sudden, a man shouted with excitement. P

I found it! I found the ring! P

See, my idea worked! P

Here’s one hundred dollars! P

In the end, everybody was happy. The man went home with one hundred dollars. P

The lady got her diamond ring back, and Uncle Bob sold lots of doughnuts. P

And, what about Homer? He was happy that his idea worked so well! P
