UNIT 1

Houses have many different shapes. There are many houses in the world. P

What about your house? What does it look like? P

The Inuit people of northern Canada live in snow houses. P

These houses are called igloos. Igloos have a dome shape. P

The Inuit people use big blocks of snow to build igloos. P

These snow houses have a hole in front. P

People can use this hole to get in and out. P

Igloos keep people warm in the winter. P

In Malaysia, many fishermen build wooden boats to live on the water. P

The boats have rooms for their families. Some boats have a living room and a kitchen. P

The fishermen can fish and live at the same time. P

Some people live underground. In Spain, there is a special place called a Cueva. P

It is under the mountains. There are many holes, so people can go in and out. P

Underground houses keep people cool in the summer and warm in the winter. P

Houses have different shapes and features. But they all have one thing in common. P

People are safe and warm in any type of house. P

UNIT 2

Today was an awesome day at World Kids Summer Camp in Vancouver, Canada! P

We got into teams and had a contest. P

Each team built a model of a special house from their country. P

Our team went first. We were all from Canada, so we made an igloo. P

We made blocks from ice and snow. Then we made a big dome with them. P

The Inuit people in Canada live in these igloos to stay warm during the cold winter. P

The next team was from Mongolia. They built a ger. P

It was made of wood and cloth. P

The Mongolians travel with them because they are easy to build and take down. P

Then it was the Malaysian team's turn. P

They showed us a floating houseboat. P

Malaysian families live in them on the water. P

The fishermen can catch fish from their houses! P

The team from the Philippines went last. P

They made tree houses! In the Philippines, there is a tribe called Bagabo. P

They build houses high up in trees. P

The houses keep them safe from dangerous animals on the ground. P

Also, it is cooler up there. P

The Filipino team's house was just like the Bagabo tribe's houses. P

In the end, everyone liked our igloo the best! P

We won and everyone had fun! P

I hope tomorrow will be this exciting, too! P

UNIT 3

Walking is too slow and too hard. P

So people all over the world use animals for transportation. P

Let's look at some of these animals today. P

First, the horse is a common animal for riding. P

People ride horses in most parts of the world. P

They move very fast. Horses are easy to train and also fun to ride. P

Some people even ride horses across water! P

Elephant riding is popular in Thailand. P

They are slow but can carry many people. P

You need to climb up high to get on an elephant's back. P

Its back is also safe and cool. But be careful. Elephants are stinky! P

People ride camels in northern Africa and Asia. P

Camels only need a little water. They can walk for a long time in the hot desert. P

They can also run very fast. It is not hard to get on a camel. P

They kneel down to let you on! Last, people use ostriches for transportation. P

The ostrich is a huge bird. It is really fast. P

It can run up to 70km per hour! People ride this bird in races for fun. P

But it is hard to stay on a moving ostrich. P

We ride each animal differently. P

But these animals have one thing in common: they make traveling easier and faster. P

UNIT 4

Important people from all over the world came to the Riders' Meeting. P

They came from far places. King Richard arrived first. P

He rode in on a tall horse. Next came Khun Kasem. P

He was on a huge elephant. Then came Fleur Phillipe on her ostrich! P

Finally, Rahmatulah entered, sitting on his camel. King Richard spoke first. P

"Well, well. My horse and I came in first." P

"My ostrich can run faster than any horse!" Fleur yelled. P

Rahmatulah shouted, "Your ostrich and Richard's horse get tired all the time. P

My camel can walk through the long, hot desert!" P

Khun Kasem said, "My elephant could carry all of you and your animals! P

No animal can beat my elephant!" P

Suddenly, everyone stopped fighting. Something was coming. P

It was Henry Ford in his car! Ford stopped and got out. Everyone laughed at him. P

"That animal is ugly! It is cold and noisy. P

And the smoke is really smelly!" Ford smiled. P

"This is my car. It does not need food. P

It does not get tired. You can drive it for a long time. P

It can also run faster than any animal." P

The other riders stopped laughing. They looked at Ford's car again. P

Everyone agreed. The car was the best type of transportation. P

UNIT 5

Almost everyone in the world loves soccer. Some of these people are deaf. P

But deaf people want to play soccer, too! So there are leagues for deaf players. P

Deaf soccer began in Great Britain. P

The Glasgow Deaf Athletic Football Club was the first in the world. P

It started in 1871. That's before Manchester United became a team! P

But in the U.S., deaf soccer started in 1965. P

Players must be almost deaf to be in a deaf soccer league. P

They must only be able to hear sounds louder than normal speaking. P

Also, players must take out their hearing aids when they play. P

They have to play without any hearing help. P

Deaf soccer is different from other soccer games. P

First, referees do not blow whistles. They wave colorful flags. P

The players see the flags and play. P

Players communicate with each other using sign language. P

Coaches may write on a board for players to read. P

Some players cannot hear the loud cheering, so they look at the crowd. P

They gain energy from the crowd's excited faces. P

Deaf soccer players are different from other soccer players. P

But they love soccer, just like everyone else! P

UNIT 6

Hello, I'm Brick Tamland for H5 Sports. P

I'm sitting here with the U.S. deaf soccer team. P

They won the soccer championship at the Deaflympics last week. P

How do you all feel? We feel great! But it wasn't easy. P

What do you mean? P

Well, our team only had a little money to use. We had to raise a lot of money. P

We used it for uniforms, training, and to go to the Deaflympics. P

I see. People need to help deaf soccer teams more, I think. P

By the way, when did your team start? P

We started in 1965 but some teams are older than our team. P

England's team started in 1871. Were there any problems during the games? P

The referees didn't use whistles during the games. P

They waved flags. Sometimes, it was hard to see them. P

Once, there was a penalty but the players kept playing! P

Do you have any advice for young deaf fans? P

When you practice or play, take out your hearing aid. P

We can't use them in games. P

Also, don't give up! Sometimes, it's hard to find people to play with, but just keep trying! P

That's great advice! You are an amazing group of athletes. P

Thank you for coming in and giving us this interview. P

UNIT 7

Today is Earth Day. Mr.Thompson's class gave presentations on helping the environment. P

Here are the three best presentations. P

How can we save water? First, have a shower instead of a bath. P

Second, turn the tap off when you are not using it. P

Finally, put a brick in the back of the toilet. P

It will use less water when you flush. P

Follow these simple steps to save water! P

Let's try to save paper together! First, use both sides of your paper. P

Don't throw paper in the garbage after using only one side. P

Next, use less paper. You can email someone instead of writing a letter. P

Last, try to buy used books or borrow books from the library. P

It's easy to use less paper! P

Here are some ways to save electricity! P

First, turn off and unplug your TV and computer when you are not using them. P

Also, don't turn on all the lights. Only turn on the lights when you need them. P

Finally, take the stairs instead of the elevator. P

This will save energy and also improve your health. P

Start saving electricity now! P

Everyone gave excellent presentations. P

It was a good chance for students to think about helping the Earth. P

UNIT 8

Kurt was in detention today. His teacher was angry. P

"Kurt! Yesterday, you turned on all the water taps. You left the lights on. P

You threw away all the paper towels! P

Don't you care for the environment?" P

"Not really," said Kurt. P

"You should care because it's your future! Sit there and think about it." P

And the teacher left. Kurt did not want to think. He was bored. P

He looked around the class. P

Under his teacher's desk, he found a box with a red button on it. P

He pushed it. KAZOOOOM! Kurt was 30 years in the future! P

The box was a time machine! Kurt saw a sad woman. P

She was dirty because there was no clean water. P

Her baby cried because she was thirsty. P

Kurt did not like this, so he pushed the button. P

KAZOOOOM! Now, he was 60 years in the future. P

There was an old man. He was using a candle. P

It was very dark because there was no electricity. P

Kurt was afraid, so he pushed the button again. P

KAZOOOOM! It was 100 years in the future. P

There were no living things. P

Kurt was terrified! He pushed the button many times. P

KAZOOOOM! Kurt was back in his class. P

Suddenly, the teacher came in. P

"Well, are you sorry for what you did?" "Yes!" Kurt shouted. P

"I'll never waste energy again. P

UNIT 9

Most inventions, such as cars, airplanes, or computers look very complex. P

Others are simple but very useful in our lives. P

One simple invention is the rubber band. P

It is a simple, round-shaped band, but it is useful for holding things together. P

The first person to get the idea was Thomas Hancock in 1820. P

But Stephen Perry, another inventor, developed the rubber band and sold the first ones in 1845. P

In the early days, people used the rubber band to stop stockings and socks from slipping down. P

Another simple invention is the paper clip. It keeps sheets of paper together. P

The first paper clip came out in 1867. P

But it was not the same as the paper clip today. P

It looked like a pair of crossed legs. P

Today, the paper clip has many shapes and sizes, but most look like "Gem Clips." P

A U.S. company first sold it in 1904. The rope is another simple but useful invention. P

It has a long history. P

The ancient Egyptians were probably the first people to make the rope in 3500 ~ 4000 BCE! P

They made the rope from plants by the river. P

They used it to pull heavy stones. P

Today, we use the rope in many different ways. P

UNIT 10

I'll never be a good inventor. P

I can't think because this house is too noisy. P

Dad is always riding his noisy exercise bike. P

Mom is always talking about the expensive electricity bill. P

I just had a brainstorm! I think I can help Mom save money. P

I will change Dad's bike. P

It will make electricity! I'm going to get my tools and start! P

I attached a special wheel to Dad's exercise bike. P

It rubs the front tire when he rides it. P

This makes electricity. It made a small light turn on! P

I have to make it more powerful. P

Dad was angry, though. P

He asked, "Eugene, do you know where my bike is?" P

But I just smiled and didn't answer. P

I did it! I put two more special wheels on Dad's bike. P

Now, it makes a lot of electricity. It made two TVs turn on! P

I will show my invention to my parents tomorrow. P

My parents love my invention. P

Dad is happy to ride his exercise bike again. P

When he rides it, we can all watch TV. P

Mom is happy because our family is saving a lot of electricity. P

I'm happy! I created a working invention! P

UNIT 11

What are folktales? They are stories from the past. P

There are many different folktales around the world. P

Sometimes, there is love in the story. P

There can also be greed or lies. P

Let's take a look at some of them. P

This folktale is called "Young Man Shows True Love." P

A young man loves a princess but he is very poor. P

One day, he fights a dangerous dragon. P

He is hurt, but he kills the dragon. P

The queen gives the man her daughter because he is brave. P

The man and the princess marry and live happily ever after. P

The next folktale is called "The Fisherman and the Fish." P

An old fisherman catches a golden fish. P

The fish has magic powers. P

The old man decides to let the fish go. P

When the old man's wife hears this, she becomes greedy. P

She asks the fish for too many things. P

In the end, they become very poor. P

The last folktale is called "The Man Who Was a Liar." P

In the story, the man lies too much. P

He lies about everything! One day, there is a fire in his house. P

He cries for help. But no one believes him. P

In the end, the fire burns his house. P

Can you tell us any folktales from your country? P

UNIT 12

A long time ago, there lived a very poor old fisherman and his wife. P

They lived in a hut. One day, the fisherman's wife started to cry. P

"I am so hungry!" she said. "Go and get some food!" P

So the fisherman went out. P

The fisherman stood on a big rock. He threw his net into the sea. P

Suddenly, he heard a voice. P

"Please let me go!" There was a golden fish in the net! P

"You can talk!" the fisherman said to the fish. P

"Yes," said the fish. P

"I have magic powers. Please let me go! I will give you anything." P

But the fisherman did not want anything. He decided to let the fish go. P

He caught another fish and went home. P

After dinner, the fisherman talked about the golden fish. P

But his wife was furious. "Why did you let it go?" she shouted. P

"Go and ask for a golden house!" P

The fisherman went to see the golden fish. He asked for a house. P

"Very well," the fish said happily. "I will give you a golden house." P

But the fisherman's wife was a greedy woman. She asked for too many things. P

Soon, the fish became very upset. P

One evening, the fisherman went home and saw his wife in tears. P

The golden house was not there! They were poor once again. P

UNIT 13

At night, do you look up at the sky? There are many stars. P

And some make images! Groups of stars make those pictures. P

Two famous groups of stars are the Big Dipper and the Little Dipper. P

They are interesting for many reasons! P

First, the two Dippers have a lot of stars. They both have seven stars each. P

Four stars look like a bowl. And three stars look like a dipper's handle. P

Put the bowl and the handle together. Then it will be complete! P

The Big and Little Dippers are also interesting because they have many different names. P

The Big Dipper is also called "Ursa Major" or the "Great Bear." P

In Great Britain, they call it the "Plough" or the "Saucepan." P

Next, the Little Dipper is called "Ursa Minor" or "Small Bear." P

They have a lot of names! Another interesting thing is their location. P

They are near the North Pole. This means not everyone can see them. P

People in the northern part of the world can see them. P

But people in the south cannot. They are visible all year round. P

But they are clearer from March to June. P

UNIT 14

Once upon a time, there was a very beautiful woman. P

Her name was Callisto. She had long red hair. P

All the men loved her beauty. P

Zeus loved her, too! Zeus was the king of the gods. P

One day, Zeus came to see Callisto. Zeus and Callisto fell in love. P

They had a son together. His name was Arcas. P

When Zeus's wife Hera found out, she was very angry. P

"Get away from my husband!" Hera shouted. P

She turned Callisto into a bear! Callisto was very frightened. P

So she ran into the woods. Many years passed. P

Arcas was now a young man. One afternoon, he went hunting with his friends. P

They saw a big bear in the woods. P

It was Callisto! When Callisto saw her son, she ran to him. P

She felt joy and love in her heart. But Arcas did not recognize his mother. P

So he took out his bow and arrow to hunt the big bear! P

Zeus looked from the heavens. Arcas was going to kill Callisto! P

He decided to help. Zeus threw Callisto and Arcas into the night sky. P

They turned into twinkling stars! The stars looked like a big bear and a small bear. P

Callisto and Arcas lived in the sky forever. P

After that, many people called them "Big Dipper" and "Little Dipper. P

UNIT 15

Do you like watching soccer? Or do you have a favorite soccer team? P

There are many great teams and soccer players in the world. P

One example is the English team, Arsenal. P

They are very successful and continue to win many games. P

But they do not do it alone! A lot of people help them. P

Let's look at some of these people. P

Paul Johnson is the Arsenal's equipment manager. P

He takes care of all the team's equipment. P

He also makes their travel plans. This is not an easy thing to do! P

Paul has a background in soccer, so he helps the players train sometimes. P

Tony Colbert is the health coach. He helps the players stay fit and healthy. P

He makes them exercise every day. P

When a player is hurt, Tony helps him get better. P

Tony's job is very important because the players must be fit to play well! P

Like the equipment manager and health coach, many people help Arsenal players. P

With their help, Arsenal players can play great games. P

It is not only about being good at sports! P

Remember this fact! Many people must work together to make a good team great. P

UNIT 16

Hello, and welcome to TN Sports News. P

We have a special guest today. Her name is April Holmes. P

April, thanks for coming by. P

It is a pleasure to be here, Jim. P

You are a famous American runner. Can you tell us your story? P

Of course, Jim. I started running at an early age. P

I was always running! In high school, I won many awards. P

But something terrible happened. What was it? P

Well, I was at a train station one day. P

I slipped, and a speeding train hit my left leg. P

The doctors had to cut it off. P

That's terrible! How did you feel? P

I was in the hospital for a long time. Sometimes, I felt angry. P

I remember crying a lot. It was a very sad time for me. P

How did you beat this accident? Did anyone help you? P

Oh, yes, many people helped me! But my doctor helped me every day. P

How did he help you? P

He always talked to me. One day, he told me about the Paralympics. P

It is like the Olympics, but for people just like me! I had a new goal. P

I exercised and practiced a lot. The next year, I entered the Paralympics. P

April, thank you for telling us your brave story. P

We'll be back after a short break. P

UNIT 17

Today, three students gave a talk. P

They stood in front of the whole school. P

They talked about brave people from the past. P

The first student talked about Mother Teresa. P

Mother Teresa lived in India for 45 years. P

During this time, she helped many sick people and children. P

Mother Teresa had heart problems, but she never stopped helping people. P

In 1979, she received the Nobel Prize for her work. P

The second student spoke about the Wright brothers. P

The Wright brothers made the first airplane in 1903. P

It was dangerous work because they could fall and get hurt! P

At first, the plane could not fly very well. P

They were unhappy about it. But they kept trying. P

In 1903, the Wright airplane took off from the ground and did not fall! P

The third student talked about Terry Fox. P

Terry Fox was from Canada. He had to cut off his leg because of cancer. P

But he did not lose hope. He decided to help doctors find a new cure for cancer! P

How did he do this? He ran across Canada with a fake leg! P

He raised a lot of money for cancer research. These people were very brave. P

But brave actions don't have to be big all the time. P

The three students were also brave. P

Why? They talked in front of the whole school! P

UNIT 18

Jennifer was not a nice girl. She was always mean to weak people. P

For example, she was not nice to handicapped students at school. P

She liked to point and laugh at them. P

She thought she was being strong and brave. But she was not. P

And soon she will learn that. P

One day, Jennifer saw a new student named Ted. P

He was a young boy in a wheelchair. P

"He looks so weak and funny," she thought. P

She started to laugh at him. P

"You are so weak! You can't even stand up!" she said. P

"I'm so much stronger than you." Ted looked at her calmly. P

He said, "Do you think being mean to weaker people makes you strong? It doesn't. P

It only makes you look weak." P

He told her about helping other people. P

Every weekend, Ted goes to the hospital. P

He plays games with kids there. P

"Helping others makes you strong and brave," he said. P

Jennifer was quiet. He was right. P

"I'm sorry," she whispered. She felt bad about her actions. P

After school, they met again. They talked for a long time and became friends. P

"Do you want to go to the hospital with me this weekend?" Ted asked. P

Jennifer smiled at him. "Yes," she said. P

"I want to be brave like you!" And they both laughed. P

UNIT 19

An English gentleman, steamboats and trains, and a bet… P

Put them together and what do you get? P

You get the novel Around the World in Eighty Days! P

Jules Verne wrote the book in 1873. P

It's an adventure story with lots of action! P

The story begins with Mr. Fogg and his helper. P

Fogg makes a bet with his rich friends. P

He will travel the world in 80 days with trains and steamboats. P

The new railway in India will help Fogg travel faster. P

During Fogg's travels, he sees many cities, animals, and beautiful women. P

He also has many exciting and dangerous adventures. P

He saves a woman from fire and his helper from Indians! P

But a detective from London follows Fogg. P

He mistakes Fogg for a thief! The detective follows Fogg and his helper around the world. P

Will Fogg and his helper reach London in 80 days? P

Who will win the bet? And what about the detective? P

Will he catch Fogg and try to throw him in jail? P

Read the novel and find out! P

UNIT 20

Today, my teacher gave the class homework. P

"Write a story with an interesting plot and characters," she said. P

But how do I begin? I look out the window and think. P

Below, I see a dog and a cat. The dog is sitting near a bank. P

The cat is hiding under a bench. P

"They would make interesting characters," I say with a nod. P

The dog will be a detective and the cat will be a thief. P

It will be like a modern Sherlock Holmes story! P

I write this down. Next, I think about the setting. P

I look out the window again. It is dark and there is just one streetlight. P

"That's it!" I shout. "The dark night is perfect for a mystery story!" P

I fill the page with all my ideas. P

This is a summary of my mystery story: P

One dark night, a detective dog looks for a thief cat on a street. P

The thief is hiding under the bench. P

He stole money from the bank to buy lots of fish. P

The detective comes closer and the thief runs away. P

The detective chases after him! The thief is fast but the detective soon catches him. P

I'm excited about the plot of my story. P

I have to finish the full story right now. P

I hope my teacher will like it! P
