3)-7. 보통명사화 할 때

구체화 시킨 것: I'd like a coffee, please. (물질명사 coffee가 아닌 커피 한잔)

직업을 나타낼 때: Mary's father is an officer in the Navy.

종교를 나타낼 때: He was a Moslem, not a Christian.

사건을 표시할 때: a murder (살인사건)

동종의 인간을 나타낼 때: He is a Caesar in speech. (Caesar와 같은 사람)

발명품, 제품을 나타낼 때: Have you ever read a Dickens? (Dickens의 작품)

4) 정관사의 용법

4)-1. 앞에 나온 명사를 받을 때

I saw a girl on my way home. The girl wore a red rose on her suit lapel.

(나는 집으로 가는 길에 어떤 소녀를 보았다. 그 소녀는 옷깃에 빨간 장미를 달고 있었다.)

4)-2. 한정적인 수식어귀가 있는 경우

* 물질, 추상, 고유명사는 원칙적으로 정관사를 사용할 수 없다.

He is called the Newton of Korea.

I am studying the English literature of the 20th century.

 * 물질, 추상, 고유명사는 수식어(형용사구, 형용사절)로 한정, 제한이 되면 정관사 the를 사용할 수 있다.

4)-3. 시간, 수량의 단위를 나타낼 때

Sugar is sold by the pound.

Gasoline is sold by the gallon. (휘발유는 갤론으로 팔린다.)

물건을 사고 팔 때 단위를 표시하는 방법은 [by the+단위]와 같이 정관사 the사용.

* She rented the apartment by the month.

* They hired a man by the day. (일당으로, 하루 단위로).

4)-4. 종족대표

The dog is a faithful animal. (개는 충실한 동물이다.)

= A dog is a faithful animal. = Dogs are faithful animals.

4)-5. 최상급, 서수, any, last, same 앞에서

* 최상급

♣ Seoul is the largest city in Korea.

♣ The waltz soon became the most popular dance form.

   (왈츠는 곧 최고 인기 있는 댄스 형식이 되었다.)

* the + first , the + second ...

♣ February is the second month of the year.

♣ You will need a second pair of shoes.

4)-6. 기계, 발명품, 악기명

The steam-engine was invented by J. Watt.

Does the lady play the piano well?

시간, 중량, 길이 등의 단위 앞에

Butter is sold by the pound. (버터는 파운드로 팔린다.)

Gasoline is sold by the gallon. (휘발유는 갤론으로 팔린다.)

the + 형용사 = 보통복수 명사

We must be kind to the old. (우리는 노인들에게 공손해야 한다.)

4)-7. 관용어구에서

♣ And, Hindus believe that we are in the middle of a cycle that will end in the earth's Destruction -- some 350,000 years in the future.

in the morning/ in the evening/ in the sun/ in the dark.

He gets up early in the morning. (그는 아침 일찍 일어난다.)

*무관사

- 국가 이름

Ex) Korea is a politically stabled country. ( 한국은 정치적으로 안정된 나라이다)

하지만 국가 이름 자체가 복수일 때는 예외이다. Ex) The United States

- 언어 이름

Ex) English is spoken in New Zealand. ( 뉴질랜드에서는 영어가 쓰인다)

- 식사

Ex) What are you going to have for dinner? (저녁식사로 뭘 먹을 거야?)

- 직위와 이름이 함께 올 때

Ex) President Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas. ( 케네디 대통령은 달라스에서 암살당했다.)

- 전치사 + 명사로 굳어진 표현들

at university / in church / in prison / in bed
