3) 부정사의 형용사적 용법

(1) 한정용법

Ex) There is no one to help me. (나를 도와줄 사람이 없다.)

Ex) There is no chair (for me) to sit on. (내가 앉을 의자가 없다.)

Ex) He made a promise to buy me a watch. (그는 나에게 시계를 사줄 약속을 했다.)

Ex) He had the kindness to show me the way. (그는 나를 도와줄 친절함을 가지고 있다.)

= He was kind enough to show me the way.

= He kindly showed me the way.

(2) 서술 용법

Ex) He seems to be honest. (그는 정직한 것처럼 보인다.)

Ex) I want you to come back by noon. (나는 당신이 정오까지 돌아오기를 원한다.)

Ex) The rumor proved to be false. (그 소문은 거짓임이 판명되었다.)

(3) be to의 용법

-예정, 약속

Ex) He is to arrive at 7 in the morning. (그는 아침 7시에 도착할 예정이다.)

Ex) We are to hold a special meeting tomorrow. (우리는 내일 특별 모임을 개최할 예정이다.)

-가능

Ex) Nothing was to be seen in the sky. (하늘에는 어떤 것도 볼 수 없었다.)

Ex) My spectators were nowhere to be found. (나의 관객들은 어디에도 찾을 수가 없었다.)

-의무·명령

Ex) You are to obey your parents. (너는 부모님에게 복종해야 한다.)

Ex) Tell him that he is to come at once. (그에게 그가 곧 돌아와야 한다는 것을 알려라)

-의도·소원

Ex) If you are to succeed you must work hard. (성공하고 싶다면 열심히 일해야 한다.)

Ex) If you are to get pearls, you must dive deep into the sea. (진주를 얻고 싶으면 바다속에 잠수해야 한다.)

-운명

Ex) He was never to see his wife and children again. (그는 그의 부인과 자식들을 다시는 못볼 운명이었다.)
