(4) 조동사 ought to
ought to는 「~ 해야 한다」는 의무를 나타내는 must와 같은 뜻의 조동사이다. ought to의 부정형은 ought not to이다.

Ex) You ought to respect the old. (노인들을 존경해야 한다.)

Ex) You ought not to lose this chance. (당신은 이번 기회를 놓쳐서는 안 된다.)

Ex) You ought to obey your parents. (부모의 말에 복종해야 한다.)

Ex) He ought to pay his debts within 15 days. (그는 15일 이내에 그의 부채를 갚아야 한다.)

Ex) You ought not to tell the secret. (당신은 그 비밀을 말해서는 안 된다.)

*「ought to have+과거분사」
「ought to have+과거분사」는 과거 사실에 대한 추측을 나타내는「must have+ 과거분사」의 의미가 아니라 「~했어야만 했는데」하고 과거에 하지 못한 일에 대한 후회나 유감을 나타내는 「should have+과거분사」와 같은 뜻으로 사용된다.

Ex) They ought to have done it yesterday. (그들은 어제 그것을 했어야만 했다.)

Ex) You ought to have sent this letter this morning. (당신은 오늘 아침에 이 편지를 부쳤어야만 했다.)

9) 조동사 had better / would rather의 용법

(1) Would rather
would rather는 「차라리 ~하는 게 좋다」는 기호나 희망을 나타낸다. would rather는 주로 ’d rather의 축약된 형태로 사용되며 than과 함께 쓰이기도 한다. would rather의 부정형은 would rather not이다.

Ex) I would rather give up the marathon. (마라톤을 포기하는게 좋겠다.)

Ex) I would rather not see her again. (다시는 그녀를 보지 않는 게 좋겠다.)

Ex) I’d rather stay home than go out with him. (그와 함께 나가느니 집에 있는 게 좋겠다.)

Ex) I’d rather think it over than decide now. (지금 결정하기보다는 좀 생각을 해보는 것이 좋겠다.)

Ex) I’d rather not go out this evening. (오늘 저녁은 나가지 않는 게 좋겠다.)

Ex) I’d rather leave today than tomorrow. (내일보다는 오히려 오늘 떠나는 게 좋겠다.)
